Sapphire Blue

Sapphire Blue is the second book of the Ruby Red trilogy, with the movie adaptation released in 2014. The movie does recap the main points of the story, but it is about a time traveler named Gwendolyn, and how she must uncover the prophecy concerning her, as well as to find the missing chronograph.

Call Me By Your Name

Call Me By Your Name is one of 2017's highly praised and hyped films. It is about the romance between Elio, the son of a professor, and Oliver, his father's research assistant, as Oliver spends six weeks with Elio's family somewhere in Northern Italy. Of all the films circulating the awards circle, this is the one I am excited yet nervous to watch. With all its high praise, my expectations have been escalating and finally watching the film gave me an anxiety, hoping that it doesn't disappoint.

Oldboy

This is going to be short, since I don't think I'm ever going to digest what I just saw. The first Park Chan-wook film I saw was Stoker, and I loved that very much so I decided to stop putting off watching some of his Korean films from my watch list. I decided to go with Oldboy, which is the second film in the Vengeance trilogy (I don't think there's a need to watch the films in chronological order, but I might be wrong) because it was his most popular one, or at least the one I keep hearing of. It is about a man who seeks revenge to his captor after imprisoning him for 15 years. I knew the twist in the film beforehand, but I didn't realize how disturbing the entire ordeal was until I saw the film.

Quick Reviews

By the way these things are going, I might have one mini-reviews post per month! These are one paragraph reviews on some of the movies I caught early this year, particularly Band Aid, The Big Sick, and 6 Years.

Hugh Grant's Romantic Comedy Movies: Ranked

I started working on this list sometime last year, but I didn't finish watching the other movies, so I'm unearthing this in time for Valentines Day. I was glossing over Hugh Grant’s filmography after watching a movie of his, and despite the plethora of work he has done, most of the movies I’ve seen of his were romantic comedies! He started out his career as a rom-com lead, and it’s safe to say he’s still doing it now. I don’t really see him as a typecast actor but in terms of genre he’s very much inside his comfort zone. I don’t keep track of his filmography, which leads us here. This ranking is based on my preferences (not really his performance), and unless he does more of these I don’t think the ranking is going to change. In general most of these aren’t that bad (one could probably name worse movies) but I just never really noticed him sticking to one kind of movie. There are eleven movies on this list, so this might be a long one. There are spoilers in case you haven’t seen any of these.

Thursday Movie Picks: Romances

Thursday Movie Picks is hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. Head over to her site to join in! This week is movies relating to romances. There's a lot of choices for this week, but I went with ones that are not exactly on the romanticized notion of romance. Here are my picks for the week.

I, Tonya

Tonya Harding was a known name in the world of figure skating. Her name was familiar even if I wasn’t sure what her story was. This film tells the story of Harding’s life, and the events that led to her peak and eventual lifetime ban in figure skating. This retelling should be taken with a grain of salt, as the film stated that the contents are based on interviews given, and that the statements are contradicting.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi is the second installment of the new trilogy written and directed by Rian Johnson. This picks up the action after the events of Force Awakens - the Resistance is fleeing and is being attacked, while Rey needed to persuade Luke Skywalker to come back to fight. From there, the movie shifts to three story arcs led by Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron, with their arcs eventually merging towards the end of the film. The company must have been happy with Johnson's work, as he is starting another trilogy for them. While this installment has its share of controversy and backlash, this was an entertaining movie that leans towards a formulaic blockbuster film. note: spoilers
